Mains-powered and interlinked: why it matters

A single battery alarm in the hall is heard in the hall. Put a closed bedroom door and a flight of stairs between it and a sleeping family, and it can go unheard until the smoke reaches the landing. Interlinked alarms remove that gap: when one detects a fire, every alarm in the house sounds at once.

Mains power removes the other common failure, the flat or missing battery. Every alarm we fit has a sealed backup battery that keeps it working through a power cut and never needs changing.

Hard-wired or radio-interlinked

A hard-wired interlink runs a cable between the alarms, which is the tidiest choice when ceilings are open for a rewire, an extension or a loft conversion. Radio-interlinked mains alarms each take power from a lighting circuit close by and link to each other wirelessly, so there are no new cables between floors and far less disruption in a finished, decorated house.

Which alarm goes where

Optical smoke alarms go in the hall and on each landing, a heat alarm goes in the kitchen, and carbon monoxide alarms go in rooms with a fixed combustion appliance. Bigger homes, loft conversions and shared houses may need more detectors in the rooms where a fire is likeliest to start, such as the living room.

Ten years, then replace

Smoke and heat alarms do not last for ever: most are made for about ten years, and the replace-by date is printed on the unit. When we test or replace alarms, we check those dates and tell you when the rest are due.

What the rules say

Three sets of rules cover most Bristol homes. The law for a standard let is a minimum; new homes, loft conversions and licensed HMOs ask for more.

WhoWhat applies
Private and social landlords in EnglandAt least one smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation, and a carbon monoxide alarm in every room with a fixed combustion appliance (gas cookers excepted). Alarms checked on the first day of each tenancy, and repaired or replaced once a fault is reported. In force in its current form since 1 October 2022.
New homes, loft conversions and new habitable roomsMains-powered alarms with a standby supply, interlinked, in the hall and on each landing (at least Grade D2, Category LD3 under BS 5839-6), and a heat alarm in a kitchen that is open to the hall or stairs.
Licensed HMOs in BristolInterlinked, mains-powered detection with a tamper-proof backup battery, a heat detector in the kitchen, and the grade and category the council sets for the size and layout of the house.

A new system is priced after a quick look, because the number of alarms and the route for power depend on the layout of the house. Alarm work can often share a visit with an EICR or other jobs, and our guide to interlinked smoke alarms explains the options in more depth.

Smoke alarms in Bristol homes

Two layouts come up again and again. The first is the knocked-through ground floor, common in the terraces of Bedminster, Southville and Bishopston, where the kitchen now opens onto the hall or the stairs. A smoke alarm there would sound every time someone cooks, so a heat alarm in the kitchen, interlinked with the smoke alarms, is the answer.

The second is the loft conversion. A new storey means a longer escape route down through the house, and building control will expect interlinked, mains-powered detection on every level. We fit it with the rest of the loft's electrics, or on its own if your builder has everything else in hand.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to replace a mains smoke alarm in Bristol?

A like-for-like mains smoke alarm replacement is £120 + VAT (£144 inc VAT). New interlinked systems are priced after a free look at the house, because the number of alarms depends on the layout.

Do landlords have to fit interlinked smoke alarms?

For a standard let in England, the law asks for a working smoke alarm on every storey used as living accommodation and a carbon monoxide alarm in any room with a fixed combustion appliance, but not specifically for interlinked alarms. Licensed HMOs in Bristol do need interlinked, mains-powered detection, and interlinked alarms are what we recommend for every rented home.

Do I need a heat alarm in my kitchen?

A smoke alarm in a kitchen goes off with ordinary cooking, so a heat alarm, interlinked with the smoke alarms, is the right detector there. For new homes and loft conversions, the Building Regulations guidance asks for one where the kitchen opens onto the hall or stairs.

Do radio-interlinked alarms still need wiring?

Each mains-powered radio-interlinked alarm needs a mains supply, usually taken from the lighting circuit near where it sits, but the alarms link to each other wirelessly, so no new cables run between floors.
