Built for Bristol weather

Outdoor electrics fail in two ways: water gets in, or a cable gets damaged. Nearly every outdoor fault we trace comes back to one of them, so that is where the care goes.

The right IP rating

Every outdoor fitting carries an IP rating, and the second number is its protection against water. IP44 copes with splashing and suits a sheltered wall light; IP65 and above suits exposed fittings; IP66 is the sensible minimum for a socket that lives on an outside wall. Cable entries are sealed so the rating on the box is the rating you actually get.

Cables that survive the garden

Cable to a garden light or a shed is steel wire armoured, buried at a safe depth with warning tape above it or clipped along a wall, never ordinary indoor cable stapled along a fence. For flexible garden schemes, low-voltage lighting run from a transformer is often the safer and easier choice.

Security lights that do not annoy the neighbours

A PIR light set off by every car on the street soon gets switched off. We aim the sensor at your path and drive, set the timer and the light level, and point the beam down, so it lights you in and does not light up the houses opposite.

When outdoor electrical work is notifiable

Under Part P of the Building Regulations, a new circuit is notifiable wherever it goes. Adding a light or a socket to an existing circuit usually is not, unless it is in a bathroom. Either way you get a certificate, and anything notifiable is notified for you through NAPIT, so there is no separate building control application.

Outdoor lighting around Bristol homes

In the terraces of Bedminster, Southville and Totterdown the job is usually a light and a socket for a small back yard, fed through the back wall from the kitchen. Semis with front drives, in Knowle, Headley Park and Hengrove or further north in Horfield and Westbury-on-Trym, tend to want a security light over the drive and a socket for the car or the pressure washer.

Larger gardens, in Long Ashton, Dundry and Stoke Bishop, are where proper garden lighting comes into its own: a lit path to the garden room, uplighters on a tree, steps you can see at night. Those schemes start with a walk round the garden after a free survey, and a fixed written price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fit an outdoor security light in Bristol?

From £180 + VAT (£216 inc VAT) for a standard security light wired from a suitable nearby circuit. If a new circuit is needed, we quote it after a free survey.

Do outdoor sockets need RCD protection?

Yes. Outdoor sockets need 30mA RCD protection, either from the consumer unit or built into the socket, and a weatherproof IP66 enclosure is the sensible minimum. Our weatherproof double socket is £295 + VAT (£354 inc VAT).

Is garden lighting notifiable under Part P?

A new circuit is notifiable; adding a light or a socket to an existing circuit outside a bathroom usually is not. We are NAPIT registered, so we certificate the work and notify anything notifiable for you.

Can you run power to a shed, garden office or hot tub?

Yes. That is a new circuit, usually in armoured cable with protection at the house board and often a small consumer unit at the far end. Our garage and garden room electrics page explains how we approach it.
