Downlights, done properly

A downlight looks simple, but three things decide whether it is a good job: what the ceiling is doing, what is above it, and what switches it. We check all three before we cut the first hole.

Fire-rated where it matters

A plasterboard ceiling under a floor helps hold back a fire, and every hole cut for a downlight weakens it. A fire-rated downlight closes that gap with an intumescent seal that swells in the heat, which is why the downlights on our price list are fire-rated fittings. In a flat, where the ceiling may be all that separates you from the neighbours, it matters even more.

A recent example from a South Bristol lounge: we took out the old spotlights and fitted six fire-rated LED downlights. They are dimmable, and the colour of the light is set on each fitting to one of four options, from warm 2700K to cool 6000K.

Insulation above the ceiling

On a top-floor ceiling, loft insulation often sits right over where the lights go. Fittings have to be rated to be covered, or kept clear of the insulation, so the driver does not overheat. We check from the loft side first, and lift and re-lay the insulation neatly around the new fittings.

Dimmers that suit LED lamps

Most flickering and buzzing we are called about comes from an old dimmer driving LED lamps it was never designed for. We fit LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmers and check the minimum and maximum load, so the lights fade smoothly from full to low. Our guide to lights flickering in the house covers the other causes.

Lighting, room by room

A single grid of downlights rarely makes a room feel right. We plan lighting in layers: general light to see by, task light where you work, and softer light for the evening, on switches that suit how you use the room.

RoomWhat usually works
KitchenDownlights for general light, pendants over an island or table, and under-cabinet strips so you are not working in your own shadow.
Living roomWall lights or lamps on a dimmer, with the ceiling light kept for cleaning days.
BathroomFittings rated IPX4 or better within zones 1 and 2 around the bath or shower, and an illuminated mirror if you want one.
Hall, stairs and landingTwo-way switching at the top and bottom of the stairs, and low-level lights for night-time.
BedroomsSwitching by the door and by the bed, and warm light that dims.

New lighting circuits are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations; we certificate the work and notify it through NAPIT, our scheme provider.

What happens on the day

Most lighting installation in Bristol homes follows the same four steps, whether it is one pendant or a whole new scheme.

1. We check before we cut

For a swap we confirm the fixing, the weight of the fitting and whether it needs an earth. For downlights we look at the ceiling from above where we can, find the joists and any insulation, pipes or cables, and agree the layout with you before the first hole. New schemes get a free survey and a fixed written quote first.

2. We isolate, fit and make good

The lighting circuit is switched off and proved dead before anything is touched. Fittings go onto proper fixings, dimmers are matched to the lamps, and chases for new wall light points are filled ready for decoration. Dust sheets go down and the room is left as we found it, minus the old fittings.

3. We test every circuit we have worked on

Every fitting is tested before we leave: earth continuity, polarity, insulation resistance and the RCD where one protects the circuit. Our guide to lights flickering in the house explains why a loose connection behind a fitting matters, which is why we torque and check every one.

4. You get the paperwork

Under Approved Document P, a new lighting circuit, and any addition or alteration to a circuit in the zones around a bath or shower, is notifiable work; replacements, repairs and additions elsewhere are not, but the same document says all of it should still be designed, installed, inspected, tested and certificated to BS 7671. So you get a certificate for every job, and notifiable work is registered through NAPIT, our scheme provider, which also means it is covered by the NAPIT Work Quality Guarantee for six years after completion. Everything we fit is designed to the current edition of the Wiring Regulations, BS 7671:2018+A4:2026, which NICEIC confirms was published on 15 April 2026, with the previous edition withdrawn on 15 October 2026.

Lighting in Bristol's older homes

In the Victorian terraces of Bedminster, Southville and Totterdown, and the Edwardian houses of Bishopston and Redland, many ceilings are still lath and plaster. They take a new pendant happily, but a run of downlights needs care: we cut cleanly, support the ceiling around each hole, and sometimes recommend surface or track lighting instead of cutting into sound original plaster.

Older lighting circuits can also lack an earth, particularly where the wiring dates from before the mid-1960s. A metal light fitting needs one, so we test before fitting and tell you what we find. If the lighting cable itself is the problem, an EICR will show how far it goes, and whether a lighting rewire or a full rewire is the sensible next step.

Lighting installation across Bristol

We are based in Bishopsworth and South Bristol is home ground, so lighting jobs in Bedminster, Southville, Totterdown, Knowle and Bishopsworth are a short drive for us. We work across the whole city and the wider South West too, from Redland and Bishopston in the north to Keynsham and Long Ashton; our areas we cover page lists every area with its own page.

The type of house tells us a lot before we arrive. A Bedminster or Totterdown terrace usually means lath and plaster ceilings and a lighting circuit that may have no earth; a 1930s semi in Knowle or Bishopsworth usually means a loft full of insulation over the bedroom ceilings; a flat in a converted house means fire-rated downlights are not optional. Mention the house type when you book and we will come prepared.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to fit a light fitting in Bristol?

Fitting a light you have bought, in the same position, is from £95 + VAT (£114 inc VAT). Fire-rated downlight replacements are £135 + VAT each, and an extra light point on the same visit is from £110 + VAT. New lighting schemes are quoted in writing after a free survey.

Do downlights need to be fire-rated?

Where the ceiling has a floor above it, or separates your flat from a neighbour, each hole weakens the ceiling's fire resistance, so fire-rated downlights are the right choice. Their intumescent seal swells in a fire and closes the gap.

Can you fit lights I have bought myself?

Yes. Tell us what they are when you book so we can check the weight, the fixing and whether the fitting needs an earth. A like-for-like swap in the same position is from £95 + VAT.

Why do my LED lights flicker on a dimmer?

Usually because the dimmer was made for old filament bulbs. An LED-compatible trailing-edge dimmer, matched to the number of lamps, normally cures it. If the flicker is on undimmed lights too, it needs fault finding.

Do I need an electrician to fit a light in Bristol?

Swapping a fitting like for like is not notifiable under Part P, but it still has to be done safely and to BS 7671, and a metal fitting on an old circuit with no earth is a real hazard. A new lighting circuit, or lighting work in the zones around a bath or shower, is notifiable and must be certificated and registered, which we do through NAPIT. Fitting a light you have bought is from £95 + VAT.

Is lighting work guaranteed?

Yes. All our work is guaranteed, and notifiable lighting work registered through NAPIT is also covered by the NAPIT Work Quality Guarantee for six years after completion: if the notified work is found not to meet the Building Regulations and we were unable to put it right, NAPIT arranges for it to be corrected, up to £25,000 or the contract value. Fittings carry the manufacturer's guarantee, which is separate.

Which parts of Bristol do you cover for lighting installation?

All of Bristol and the wider South West. We are based in Bishopsworth, so Bedminster, Southville, Totterdown, Knowle, Bishopsworth, Hartcliffe and Withywood are closest, and we are regularly in Redland, Bishopston, Horfield, Keynsham and Long Ashton. Two or three lighting jobs on one visit is the best value wherever you are.
