Working in Horfield

Horfield sits between Bishopston and Filton, with Horfield Common at its heart, the Memorial Stadium on Filton Avenue and Gloucester Road running up its western edge. The housing changes as you head north: Edwardian terraces nearer Gloucester Road, then streets of 1920s and 1930s semis, and estates of homes first built for the council, many of them owner-occupied now.

That mix means no two Horfield jobs look alike. A terrace might need its first proper board upgrade in forty years, while a 1930s semi might have been rewired in the 1980s and simply need modern protection added. We look before we quote, the estimate is free, and the published prices are the same here as anywhere else in Bristol.

Horfield homes and what they need

Most of the electrical problems we are called to in Horfield come from age rather than damage. Wiring installed in the 1960s to 80s is often still sound, but the fuse board that protects it may have no RCD at all, or a single RCD that trips the whole house when one appliance develops a fault. An EICR is the quickest way to find out which of those you have, and costs from £200 + VAT depending on the number of bedrooms.

Where a report does show a problem, it is usually a short list: an old board, a few sockets without earths, a bathroom without the right protection. We price that list as fixed remedial work, and you decide what goes ahead.

Interwar semis and former council homes

Homes built between the wars were wired for a few lights and a socket or two per room. Most have been rewired once since, often in the 1970s or 80s, and sometimes only partly, with a newer kitchen circuit sitting beside original lighting cable. When we find old rubber-insulated cable still in use, or lighting circuits with no earth, we will show you and recommend a rewire of that part of the house rather than patching around it.

A board that keeps tripping

A fuse board with one RCD protecting everything will switch the whole house off when a single appliance leaks a little current, and older boards do this more as appliances multiply. Replacing it with a board that gives each circuit its own RCBO means a fault only takes out the circuit it is on. Our consumer unit replacements start from £680 + VAT, including testing, the certificate and notification.

Drives, chargers and garages

Further north in Horfield more houses have a drive or a garage, which makes a home EV charger practical. We check the supply and the board first, then fit a 7kW smart charger from £780 + VAT including the charger for a run of up to 10 metres, and notify the network operator for you.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly can you get to Horfield?

Usually within a few days for routine work. If it is urgent, tell us when you call and we will be honest about when we can get there.

Do you charge extra to come out to Horfield?

No, Horfield is a regular part of our patch. Estimates are free, and any visit cost is agreed when you book, not sprung on you later.

Can you rewire a Horfield house while we live in it?

We would rather not. For a full rewire we always try to have the house empty, as it is safer and quicker, so we will ask you to move out while the work is done if you can. If that really is not possible, tell us at the free survey and we will talk through what can work.
